ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS

Who says that birds dont like Wind Turbines?

Is there an impact on bird life?

The human intervention in nature inevitably leads to environmental disturbance. Settlement, transport, agriculture and forestry limit the habitats of the animals an increasingly. Die each year millions of birds to large glass fronts, on the road or in man-made environmental disasters such as tanker accidents. Also arguably the greatest human intervention in nature is not without impact on the bird population. The change in climate is already leading to detectable changes in behaviour of migratory birds. This emerges from a study by the Institute of Zoology, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Ornithologist studies on the occurrence of resting, breeding and migratory birds in the vicinity of wind turbines and found that only a few species were affected in the long term in their behaviour. Collision occurrence during bird migration is possible and can be avoided through sophisticated layout planning. Almost every project is now accompanied by ornithological studies in nature reserves and bird sanctuaries are also no wind turbine Situated.

Does a windfarm has an impact on domestic or farm animals ?
Farm animals such as horses or cows or domestic animals adaptation change is fairly fast. Abnormal behaviour in animals through the operation of wind turbines near paddocks, pastures and stables have not yet been observed.

What is the impact on landuse?
The turbines occupy a minor portion (1%) of the total wind farm land area with no impact on agricultural activities around them.

How much water is used throughout a wind turbine operation?
There is no water use related to wind turbines operation. Nevertheless there is water use related to wind turbines manufacturing.

What are the life cycle emissions of a wind turbine (the emissions related to manufucturing, transportation of a turbine)?
There are no GHG emissions during the operation of wind turbines. The CO2 emissions related to materials compositions, turbine manufacturing and transportation , which is limited between 9-18g CO2/kWh which is relatively low compared to natural gas (272-90718g CO2/kWh).Wind farm has the lowest lifecycle emissions compared to other power generator systems.

What are the environemntal benefits that we get with a wind turbine operation?
Wind power emits no GHG gases or toxic substances and no wastes during its operation.

Are there noise level disturbances related with a wind turbine operation?
During the construction of wind turbines comprehensive planning laws must be respected. Thus, the expected noise emissions are already checked in the planning phase. This is based on the “Technical Instructions on Noise Abatement” (TA-noise), are defined in the respective concrete specifications for sound level, which may not be exceeded in residential, mixed or commercial areas. These limits are between 35 dB (residential) and 45 dB (Mixed). For a building permit compliance with these values must be evidenced by a certificate. Basically, modern wind turbines produce far less noise than their predecessors from the early days of wind power; they are better soundproofed and have acoustically optimized rotor blade shapes. In a few hundred meters they are acoustically scarcely noticeable.

Are there infra sound disturbances related with A WIND TURBINE OPERATION?

Studies by the former Federal Health Office have shown that infra sound below the perception threshold, ie sound below 20 Hz and a sound pressure level of less than 130 dB, for the human organism has no negative effects. Independent measurements according to the infra sound generated by wind turbines achieved even at close range is far from these values and is therefore completely harmless. The Federal Pollution Control Act in Germany writes clear sound protection limits before in wind turbines near residential areas. The corresponding distances are adhered to with all planning and construction.

What are the statistics related with public acceptance in terms of view impact concerning wind turbine operation?

View impact is a subjective element for each individual. However according to a 2011 Eurobarometer survey 89% of the people are favorable in wind energy utilization compared to fossil fuels utilization. Poland (94%) emerged one of the top countries most in favor of wind power. Representative surveys of the leading pollsters TNS, TNS Emnid, Forsa and Allen Bach prove this. About 90% of the population is therefore in favor of the expansion and increased use of renewable energies. The TNS survey shows that 65% more renewable energy plants – especially wind power plants – also welcome in your own neighborhood. After the Forsa study 73% of respondents are supportive in an accelerated development of renewable energy and energy efficiency, thereby temporarily when electricity prices are expected to rise. Renewable energies have higher overall acceptability values than all other forms of energy. 75% of respondents in the TNS survey say they want preferred to purchase their electricity from renewable energy sources. Only around 12% are in favour of natural gas, 6% for nuclear and 3% for coal.

What are the total CO2 emissions avoidance related to wind turbine operation?
EWEA estimates that wind energy avoided the emission of 140Mtn CO2 IN 2011. Equivalent to 33% of the total EU car fleet, avoiding CO2 costs of around 1.4bn euro. In 2020 wind energy is estimated to avoid 342Mtn of CO2 equivalent to 80% of the total car fleet in the EU, avoiding CO2 costs of around 8.5bn euro. In 2030 wind energy is projected to avoid 642M tn of CO2. Which is equivalent to 152% of the total EU car`s fleet, avoiding CO2 costs of around 26bn euro.

ECONOMIC IMPACTS

Are there local jobs involved?
We are investing for local authorities beneficial throughout our projects. Maintenance inspections viewing patrol can be supported by local unemployed habitants with no need of technical knowledge, while for technical maintenance requirements we prioritise in local technicians. Local authorities can benefit from the local tax income issued in Germany or Poland while in countries that there is no local tax issues we fund the local authorities for social purposes.

Is wind power good for the economy?
Based on EWEA wind energy contributed 32bn euros to the EU economy in 2010 and as of 2012, 250,000 people were employed in wind power related jobs. By 2020 the sector is estimated to generate 520,000 jobs. Between 2001 and 2010 the wind energy sector increased its contribution to GDP by 33% while wind power contribution in avoiding fossil fuels imports costs of 9.6bn euros in 2012 with estimation of increase to 47-51bn euros in 2030.

As the fossil fuel electricity increases porpotionally to oil price per barell, wind power originated electricity price is decreasing.

Is electricity from wind more expensive than fossil fuels?

As the fossil fuel electricity increases porpotionally to oil price per barell, wind power originated electricity price is decreasing.
On the contrary, as carbon taxes take place and fossil fuels are depleting the fossil fuel prices are projected to rise from 67.6e/MWh in 2010 to 80.3e/MWh for coal in 2020 compared to onshore wind power cost which is 64.9e/MWh in 2010 to 57.41e/MWh in 2020. The projected increase of the oil price from $20 to $100 per barell is estimated to increase the EU`S annual import gas bill to $45 bn. These projected values consist of wind power the most competitive in the energy sector. As carbon taxes increases makes the fossil fuels more expensive

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

What are the main components of a wind turbine?
A typical wind turbine consists of tower, blades, rotor and nacelle with gear box. Wind blades are composited by light materials such as wood, carbon – fibre, while the tower is composed with concrete based material.

How does a wind turbine work?
Blade rotating is based on two conditions shaping the blades asymmetrically and aerodynamically, in such a way (thick in the root, twisted along the length, short tipped at the end) so as to create a flow difference between the upper and the lower surface and increase the angle of attack between the blade`s tip point and the wind direction so as to increase the lift force of the blade.

What are the operating wind velocities?
When wind speed exceeds 3m/s the rotor starts rotating the blades generating electricity. Wind turbine reaches its rated level/peak power level when wind speed exceeds 11-15m/s until the point of 20-25m/s which is the cut off speed where the rotor stops rotating limiting the load on the rotor to prevent any damage from over speeding in rotation.
